Strength and Conditioning

Case Study:

Prior to using TeamBuildr, GACS used workouts cards for all 275 athletes. At some point, the program realized it could not afford to continue printing for that many athletes, especially considering many athletes needed modifications that were not reflected on the cards.

Athletes were responsible for writing down their maxes and working set results. Former head strength coach Gary Schofield and current head strength coach Rich Burnett would collect the cards and input the results for use on the next session using an APRE adjustment (Auto-regulatory Progressive Resistance Exercise).

For example, if a Trap Bar Deadlift yielded a new 1RM of 275 based on an athlete's working set, then a coach would have to adjust the new 1RM the next session based on the next APRE working session. In order to cut down on time spent recording maxes, athletes would often walk over and jot down their numbers between sets.

Although it worked, it was not efficient. GACS Strength could not run a report without data-entering into Excel which their time did not always allow. Sports coaches were not getting reports and everything was an “eyeball” test on whether teams were getting stronger.

Enter TeamBuildr

By implementing the TeamBuildr platform, prescribed loads are now calculated and recorded through software. This creates seamless and efficient data collection right at the rack, but it also automates the process of calculating the prescribed loads for the next session without any coach input. APRE on autopilot!

As coaches program the desired APRE intensities on the TeamBuildr programming calendar, the working set inputs will update the 1RM for every lift and its APRE variation.

Additionally, GACS Strength can now utilize over 12 reports without any manual data input on the coach's part. Progress charts are regularly shown to sports coaches and strength rankings can be displayed relative to body weight - accounting for the wide disparity in athlete development levels at the high school age.

Utilized Features

GACS uses iPads mounted to tablet stand that can be picked up and carried from station to station as athletes rotate around the weight room. Leaderboards are used with vertical jump competitions with each class and also with chin up competitions. Leaderboards can be displayed on weight room TV's which update as new entries are made into the tablets. Athletes can also access leaderboards on their mobile app.

Instructional videos are available to athletes via the mobile app when athletes are off-campus. Remote training is an important aspect for the Spartan Strength program as many athletes travel during the summer or participate in other activities during offseason. Strength coaches have no choice but to train athletes remotely during offseason and GACS always needed a method of instructing on lifts, providing alternative lifts, and progressing volume and load prescription based on athlete participation.

The TeamBuildr platform has resulted in nearly 2.5 hours saved per week by eliminating the need for athletes and coaches to input performance results manually. Additionally, reports are created and exported whereas they were not before and students/athletes now have a digital resource for their strength program whether for training or keeping up with their classmates.

This platform has saved us nearly 2.5 hours a week in data entry while improving the way in which we program using APRE.
