Case Study:

Coach Greg Adamson and his staff of 6 coaches used TeamBuildr to program training for athletes after testing a few software platforms in the market.

The oly staff understood that the previous method of manually creating workouts cards was a pain point that needed address. Coach Adamson made the declaration that the staff had to modernize in order to make athletes more competitive. The strength staff also saw TeamBuildr as giving athletes ownership of their training in addition to making the program more efficient.

The UT strength staff prefers to program training on a weekly basis in order to stay fluid. Adamson found that TeamBuildr was strong tool for accommodating their programming method. Before Teambuildr, UT did not always program weekly because it was logistically difficult, especially when considering factors like “return to perform” protocols. With TeamBuildr's calendar system, coaches can "tier" athletes into groups, sub-groups or individuals within seconds which allows coaches to write and modify programs resulting in hours saved programming.

According to Adamson, "TeamBuildr definitely saves money; I used to be a notorious tree killer. I printed out tons of paper - just with my athletes alone this has been a savings for us." Going paperless signals progress in efficiency and cost-savings to the administration.

Regardless of Tennessee's status as a storied SEC program, budget limitations can still hamper acquisition of new technologies. However, the price point of TeamBuildr was "unreal." The Director of Performance acknowledges moments where budget gets tight and that price tag of TeamBuildr made it a no brainer for them.

Tennessee's olympic strength staff trains 250 athletes in a newly built weight room finished in 2017. Prior to the new weight room,  Adamson used paper workout cards to distribute the training sessions and collect data. UT now uses the Weight Room View module in the facility as the primary form of data collection. Every rack in the new facility has an iPad mounted to it with magnetic mounts sourced via TeamBuildr.

Additionally, the iOS and Android mobile apps are huge for remote training - lots of athletes go international or go to camps in the offseason. The staff can still have communication with athletes and share programming effectively without trading PDF's or Excel spreadsheets, enhancing their ability to coach remotely.

Enhancing Reporting

Coach Adamson and his staff run reports every six weeks to take a look at key performance indicators of strength such as Squats and Cleans to see where things are trending. Adamson also runs weekly reports for training logs and checks whether athletes are following prescribed intensities. The reporting module makes it easy to compare different training blocks; the better reports means UT obsessed less on test day since they get a more consistent feedback loop between test days. This allows coaches to focus more on the daily training rather than "hitting numbers" every 6 weeks. New PR’s have become a norm with strength phases but the difference now is that athletes are taking ownership of their numbers. In other words, they know what they did last phase and have an objective measure to utilize when working day to day.

Adamson says the goal is to make it as easy as possible to hold athletes accountable and TeamBuildr eliminates excuses by giving athletes the ability to be responsible.

With a big staff like Tennessee's, the software allows every coach to keep their own programming style while also being organized and keeping a level of quality and consistency across the department. Adamson says the department strives to speak the same terminology and the software helps to do that.

We train 250 highly competitive athletes and recognized the need to give them a better weight room experience. TeamBuildr has done that for us through their technology and outstanding customer service.
